4. Fun Fact: I Participated in (and Won) the National Novel Writing Month (AKA NaNoWriMo) Contest in 2007

You should try it, too.  It’s an equal opportunity contest–anyone can win.  And looky what I got for all my hard work:

That, and…oh right:  A novel.

5. One Frequently Asked Question (I promise I’ll let you know when there are more.)

Q: Okay Miss Smartypants, Miss “I went to Penn, I think I’m so great”…I hate to break it to you, but I think your business name is grammatically incorrect!  Shouldn’t it be Both are Better?

A: Let me guess…you went to Princeton?  No, but seriously–without getting into all the grammatical technicalities of mass and count nouns, why don’t we quickly check whether my usage passes the common sense test?  Consider, if you will, the following narrative:

John and Jane walk into a bar.  They find two empty stools and sit.

Jane: “So, who did you finally hire to work on that new brochure you were telling me about?”

John: “Oh, I’m so glad you asked.  A colleague of mine referred me to Rachel Estrada Ryan.  We had coffee this morning, and I hired her on the spot.  She’s fantastic.”

Jane:  “How lovely.  Is she a writer or a designer?  Who else is helping you with the project?”

John: “That’s just it–she does both.  She’s a writer and a designer, so I don’t have to hire anyone else!  What a relief!”  In a fit of jubilance, John climbs onto the bar, beckons the bartender and makes a grand sweeping gesture over his fellow patrons. “First round’s on me!”

Jane (to herself, since John is now standing on the bar):  “Wow.  I suppose having both is better.”

Thank you, Jane.  I rest my case.
